It’s hard not to think about Black Friday without imagining those videos of zombie-like hordes smashing down the store windows and fighting over discounted TVs. It pushes our buttons in a way that a 50% sale in the stock market does not (if only!).

We find limited time offers hard to resist – a deep discount, the clock ticking, the secret pride at grabbing a bargain. If you do your shopping for VPNs and TVs once a year, it can be great. But if you’re not careful, you end up with too much stuff, even worse, things you don’t need.

As always with purchases, remember to think, “Is there value in this purchase? Do I truly need this item?” In buying and investing, it is good to put a gap between emotion (“I gotta buy this now / I gotta sell now!”) vs action (pressing the button). Leave a day or ask a friend.

When are you in the black?

Black Friday comes from the retail industry finally making it ‘into the black’ and becoming profitable for the year. At the end of November! Not my kind of business to be honest. But do you know your numbers that precisely?

When are you in the black? Add up all your total annual expenses, divide it by your income and multiply the result by 12 (months). Let me know!

My Black Friday present for you

Having said all that, I wanted to give you something of value. So I’ve taken parts of my Expat Investing Academy program that might be useful for you and repackaged them into smaller boxes of festive goodness.

10 Steps to Expat Financial Independence course $7
Over 10 video lessons where I go through my dead simple 10-step process for reaching expat FI and highlight what you need to think about for each step. A great introduction to expat FI, unlocking two further courses…

Plan Your Future course $27
A sorely neglected area, what do you need to think about when planning your financial future? Immense long-term stress that disappears once you have a clear framework and direction for financial planning and decision-making.

I’ve thrown in my upgraded Net Worth Calculator tool, which is part of my even more upgraded Financial Planning tool you get with the Expat Investing Academy.

How to Invest as an Expat course $97
The biggest obstacle expats face is figuring out how to actually invest from the country they are living in. It took me years to discover how to do it and I don’t want you to have to go through the same scrabbling around!

This course shows exactly how to do it, picking an offshore brokerage platform to buy your funds, protecting your money and transferring it cost-efficiently. Plus step-by-step video guides on all aspects of using your brokerage platform (IB), from the tricky questions in the application form to making your first investment.
